As is the case with everything, your nails benefit from good habits: simple, easy-to-do things that optimize your nails’ condition.
Being well prepared, makes the rest a whole lot easier and will benefit the longevity of the final result. Follow the 5-step plan below.
1. Clean your nails with an acetone-free nail polish remover – preferably one with natural ingredients. This removes old polish and dirt for better adhesion of the nail polish.
2. Cut and file your nails into the desired shape.
3. Pamper your nails and cuticles with a simple nail bath: mix some lukewarm water and a few drops of mild facewash in a bowl and soak your nails for 3 minutes. While you’re at it, give your hands a well-deserved scrub.
4. Your cuticles are now soft from the bath. Carefully push back your cuticles and massage with some nourishing cuticle oil and apply hand cream on hands.
5. Apply some alcohol to a cotton pad to remove the remaining grease from the surface of your nails while your hands and cuticles stay nourished.
When the good habits are set and the foundation has been laid, it’s time for the real deal!
Time for the finishing touch: the top coat. This final protective layer prevents chipping and scratching and adds extra shine.
Nails mostly consist of keratin – a type of protein that benefits from vitamins and minerals in our food. Aiming for healthy nails? Then eating well and clean is a must. Simultaneously avoid elements that weaken nails. Like chemicals in cleaning products, so always wear cleaning gloves. And what about chemical nail products? There are enough natural alternatives to be found. This prevents nails from becoming soft and brittle.
Drinking plenty of water does so much for our bodies – including our nails. And don’t forget about external hydration; think nourishing products for cuticles and hands.
A base coat does 3 crucial things: it creates a good adhesive basis, prevents discoloration of your nails from nail polish and nowadays, base coats even nourish and strengthen your nails. In short, a step that should never be skipped.
Time for the fun part: adding a pop of color - the options are limitless! Tip: apply some Vaseline on the skin around your nails to easily remove any ‘spilled’ nail polish afterwards.
