We’re often asked what types of wool itch. Whether a knit itches or not, does differ per person and wool type, but also has to do with how the wool is processed and taken care of. But there are some things you can take into account to minimize itchiness.

Wool is a natural product and needs some time to adjust to your body temperature. What many people don't know is that 'warmed-up' wool doesn't itch or itches less. Have you ever put on a sweater and immediately thought: no, not for me! Next time, wait 5 minutes and let the fibers do their work.

The itching of wool is caused by the scaly surface of the fiber that can lead to irritation when it comes in contact with skin. And logically, the thicker the wool fiber the greater the chance of itching. So you want to have a lookout for the finest wools.

And yes, that often means the more expensive ones, but also the most qualitative knits. Merino, cashmere, alpaca and lambs wool are especially known for their non-itchy character. In case of a blend, you'll have lesser chance of itching if the item consists of at least 30% of one of the wool types mentioned above.

Dealing with an itchy sweater anyways? There are some tricks to minimize that itchy feeling.

Wet the garment and put it in the fridge in a plastic bag for at least 24 hours. Doing so locks the fibres in place, so they don’t shed and poke into your skin. The next day, leave your garment to dry flat slowly.
How do you soften your hair? Right. With conditioner. The same applies for your wool garment. Massage some diluted (high-end) conditioner into your garment and use a wool wash program afterwards to get rid of any excess. Leave flat to dry.

Really can’t tolerate wool? Then there are many stylish options to still wear that beautiful sweater. Simply wear a turtleneck, long sleeve, blouse, tank top or even a dress underneath and you’re good to go. Great for adding some extra warmth while simultaneously providing your look with a personal twist.
