Removing nail polish from clothing?

Painting your nails doesn’t always go smoothly, and sometimes you might spill on your clothes. But is it possible to remove nail polish from clothing? Fortunately, there are several ways to do it, using products you likely have at home. Always proceed carefully when removing stubborn stains. Start by testing a small, inconspicuous area of the clothing item to ensure the product doesn’t discolor, leave marks, or spread the stain further before treating the entire spot.

This applies to all types of clothing, whether you’re removing nail polish from jeans, cotton garments, or a silk blouse.

TIP:

Did you spill nail polish on clothing that can’t go in the washing machine? Take it to a dry cleaner for professional cleaning and avoid trying it yourself first.

How to remove nail polish from clothing

The simplest solution for removing nail polish from clothing is, of course, using nail polish remover. It’s recommended to use a non-acetone remover to minimize stress on the fabric. While a non-acetone remover is slightly less powerful, it’s gentler on nails and also on delicate fabrics.

Steps to remove nail polish from clothing with nail polish remover

  1. Place the item flat on a wooden table and lay some absorbent paper towels or a clean cloth under the fabric. Arrange the fabric so that the back of the clothing is protected.

  2. Apply non-acetone nail polish remover to a cotton swab or cotton pad, and dab gently on the stain to remove it.

  3. Repeat with non-acetone remover as needed until the stain is completely removed.

  4. Rinse with lukewarm water.

  5. Wash the garment as usual.

How to remove nail polish from clothing without nail polish remover

No non-acetone nail polish remover on hand? Here’s another tip that might be even easier and just as effective - using hairspray. Hairspray isn’t only great for setting your hairstyle but also for removing nail polish from clothing.

Steps to remove nail polish from clothing with hairspray

  1. Lay the item flat on a wooden table with an absorbent paper towel or clean cloth underneath to protect the surface.

  2. Spray the hairspray onto the stain, holding the spray head at a slight distance from the fabric.

  3. Let the hairspray sit for a few seconds.

  4. Gently dab the area with a dry cloth, cotton swab, or cotton pad.

  5. Wash the garment as usual.

  6. Still see traces of the stain? Repeat the steps above as needed.

TIP:

If the nail polish is completely dry, follow the steps above, allowing the hairspray to sit for a few minutes. Then, carefully remove the nail polish, using a clothing brush if needed.

Additional tips for removing nail polish from clothing

Beyond nail polish remover and hairspray, there are other household items you can try, such as deodorant spray, perfume, or diluted alcohol. As always, proceed carefully and test the product first on an inconspicuous area of the fabric.

*The tips and steps provided above are suggestions. If in doubt, always consult a professional cleaner for stain removal.

General stain removal tips

  1. Check the fabric type and always verify what the item is made of before using strong agents. Delicate fabrics like silk are best treated with a damp cloth.

  2. Prevent stains from setting and avoid putting a stained item directly in the washing machine without spot-treating, as the heat can set the stain.

  3. Remember: water first. Act quickly by gently dabbing the stain with a lukewarm, damp cloth. Avoid rubbing and allow it to soak if needed. Then, look up how to treat the specific stain.

  4. The Stain Remover Brush from Bondi Wash or the Textile Brush from Kinfill can be used in place of a cloth to avoid excess friction. These brushes help lift stains without damaging the fibers.

Note: After spot-treating, wash the garment as you normally would, and always follow the care instructions on the garment label.
