Brown is an all-time favorite (base) color in autumn and pairs effortlessly with other earth tones. It’s often called the new black because it offers the same neutral foundation for endless outfit combinations while serving as a softer, warmer alternative.

Hazelnut brown, chestnut brown, chocolate brown, caramel brown, taupe... the range of brown shades is endless. Pair brown with other brown tones or beige to stay within the same color family and add depth with different textures—think of the coarse texture of knits and the smooth touch of silk.

Brown offers countless possibilities, from a warm and cozy vibe to an elegant look. These outfit styles are further highlighted by the varied textures of brown clothing—for instance, a brown twill trouser gives off a different impression than an elegant silk brown dress.

Although camel falls under the brown tones, it also overlaps somewhat with ochre yellow. Camel brown is a shade of brown where the addition of yellow plays a significant role, defining the warm character of the color. Ochre or ochre yellow, on the other hand, is a yellow tone subtly pigmented with brown and has a slightly golden glow—often referred to as brown-yellow.

Both ochre yellow and camel blend beautifully with brown tones, as well as other earth tones like green and beige. Neutral colors such as dark blue and gray also mix effortlessly with both ochre yellow and camel.

From grass green and olive green to sea green, emerald green, khaki green, and sage green—there’s no denying that green is a quintessential natural tone, as reflected in its color names. Besides its natural character, green also conveys a sense of balance—perfect for making it the base color of your outfit.

Like other earth tones, green shades mix effortlessly with the rest of the earth tone palette. Complementarily, green creates a striking contrast with red, as well as with vibrant colors like orange and pink, where green serves as a neutral base. Want to emphasize the natural quality of a garment, like cashmere or merino wool? Opt for green, brown, or beige.

Terracotta and rust tones are the rich colors within the earth tone palette and are a true enhancement when paired with neutral colors like brown, green, and beige. Terracotta has its roots in pink and red tones—and originally in the color of clay. The color is known for its minimal ability to absorb heat, making it a popular choice in Mediterranean countries.

Rust, on the other hand, is a slightly bolder variation originating from the red-brown color palette. Rust often features undertones that blend red, brown, and orange. Both colors showcase their versatility in combination options—not only do they pair beautifully with other earth tones, but also with a range of colors from the spectrum, including shades of blue, neutrals, red, and pink.

Beige is one of the most neutral shades in our color scheme and belongs to the lighter tones of brown. The cooler variations of this color have a pink undertone, while warm beige is characterized by a yellow undertone. Beige provides a safe base and offers a versatile canvas for endless combinations—try pairing it with a bold, striking color for an interesting contrast.

In clothing, beige is often used with a mélange effect to add depth, enhancing the material’s rich appearance—think of a mottled beige knit. Pairing beige with brown creates a beautiful tone-on-tone look, or combine it with green tones for an elegant and serene ensemble.

Spring Type

This type has light hair and eye colors with a warm undertone. The skin also has a warm, yellowish undertone. Bright, light colors with warm tones suit this type well. Within earth tones, shades like light yellow, camel, olive green, sea green, and (orange) red work beautifully.

Summer Type

Muted, light tones with cool undertones define the summer type. These align with light hair and eye colors with cool tones and a cool skin tone with a pink undertone. Soft, grayish earth tones and browns like taupe complement this color type.

Autumn Type

As the name suggests, the autumn type pairs well with nearly all earth tones. From rust brown to dark brown, these warm shades flatter darker eye and hair colors with warm undertones.

Winter Type

For the winter type, darker shades with cool yet vibrant undertones are ideal. Think of colors like chocolate brown or a purple shade such as aubergine. These tones suit the dark hair and eye colors and cool, pinkish skin tone perfectly.
